AI Search Visibility Metrics & KPIs: What to Track in 2026
The five AI search visibility KPIs worth tracking are mention rate, average position, share of voice, citation sources, and week-over-week trend per engine.Everything else is derivative. Here's what each one means, why it matters, and the honest way to measure it.
1. Mention rate โ the core KPI
Mention rate is the percentage of AI answers that include your brand, across repeated samples of the same realistic customer question. It's the single most important AI visibility number because it maps directly to outcomes: mentioned = considered, absent = invisible.
The honesty rule:one check is not a measurement. AI answers vary between runs even with identical questions, so a credible mention rate needs multiple samples per question per engine (we run up to 3 per engine per prompt, weekly). Any tool showing you a single-run "you rank #2!" result is selling you noise.
2. Average position
When you are mentioned, where do you appear in the list? AI answers typically name 3โ5 businesses, and being named first carries the same psychological weight as ranking #1 on Google. Track average position only across answers where you appear โ mixing in absences corrupts the metric.
3. Share of voice
Count every business named across all collected answers in your market, and compute each one's share. This reveals your true AI-era competitors โ which are often notthe ones you compete with on Google. Share of voice is also the KPI that makes client reporting concrete: "AI recommends you 4ร this month, your top rival 8ร" lands harder than any abstract score.
4. Citation sources
The websites AI engines cite when answering are the levers behind every other metric. Track which domains appear, how often, and whether you're present on them. This turns AI visibility from a vanity dashboard into an action list: get listed where the engine already looks.
5. Trend per engine
Each engine behaves differently โ a model update can drop your ChatGPT visibility while Gemini holds steady. Weekly per-engine trend lines catch these shifts early enough to respond, and they prove (or disprove) that your optimization work is moving the needle.
What NOT to obsess over
- Single-day scores โ too noisy to mean anything; look at weekly aggregates.
- Global averages across engines โ useful as a headline, useless for action. Optimize per engine.
- Sentiment micro-scores โ for most local businesses, being mentioned at all dwarfs tone nuances.
